ONE OF the most famous motorbikes committed to celluloid is going up for auction. The Stars and Stripes-painted Harley-Davidson ridden by Peter Fonda in the 1969 film Easy Rider is expected to fetch between $1m (£610,000) and $1.2m when it is sold next month.
The bike was one of four identical Harleys used during filming and is said to be the only surviving one. It featured in the climactic scene in which Fonda is shot by rednecks, thrown from his bike and killed.
The seller is Michael Eisenberg, a California businessman who once co-owned a Los Angeles motorcycle-themed restaurant with Fonda and his Easy Rider co-star Dennis Hopper. He says he will donate a proportion of the auction price to charities supported by Fonda. The auction is being held by Profiles in History online and at its galleries in Calabasas, California, on October 18.
