Video: Banned driver jailed after speeding at 115mph on 30mph roads

WEST Midlands Police have release footage of the high-speed car chase that led to the jailing of a man who had already been banned from driving.

Kamar Farooq, 30, was convicted of dangerous driving and jailed for two-and-a-half years, after he failed to stop for police and drove at speeds of up to 115mph in 30mph zones — nearly four times the legal limit.

The incident, which took place on September 23 last year, was captured on dash cam from a chasing police car and by police helicopter. The footage shows Farooq driving an £85,000 BMW M3 at dangerous speeds, at times on the wrong side of the road, before crashing into a traffic island and coming to a stop against another car at an adjacent petrol station.

West Midlands Police say that after the collision in Chester Road, Castle Bromwich, Farooq jumped into the backseat alongside two other men and claimed to have been a passenger, but CCTV footage earlier that night showed the driver wearing clothes matching those of Farooq.

Despite this, in court on Friday (August 25) Farooq still denied being the driver.

PC Robert Lattimer, from the roads policing unit at Chelmsley Wood, said: “Officers had suspicions around the vehicle and tried to pull it over; but Farooq failed to stop.”

He added: “This was a high performance vehicle and the outcome could have been much worse. He now faces a long time behind bars rather than behind the wheel of a car.”

As well as being jailed, Farooq received a 10 year driving ban at Birmingham Crown Court.
