IT USED to be easy: you’d open the bonnet and there was a lump of metal called an “engine”, to which there’d be bolted an electrical thing and a battery and transmission and a couple of other bits. . . and that was it. Fixing things required a spanner set, a hammer, a tub of grease, half an hour and a pint of tea.
On a modern car, open the bonnet and you’re faced with a huge, shiny, sculpted expanse of plastic, under which — you presume — lies magic. It’s as if the car maker is saying, “Do not touch for we have created a masterpiece beyond your comprehension. Back away, mortal; you can do only harm.”

Haynes knows this is all rubbish, of course. The publisher of the car maintenance guides has been guiding motorists through DIY tasks since 1956, stripping down specific makes and building them back up again, all the while making step-by-step notes.
Now it has launched a new OnDemand video service aimed at reassuring motorists that it most definitely is possible to work on a modern car at home, and what’s more it may save them hundreds of pounds on a range of essential maintenance tasks.
