Doorless Citroën ‘My Ami Buggy II’ beach-mobile set for the UK
Only 40 for the UK market
The tiny Citroën Ami electric vehicle has a new special edition version aimed at young beach-goers.
British readers who like the look of the Citroën My Ami Buggy II, which follows the “My Ami Buggy Ultra-Limited Series”, will be pleased to learn that the new model will be made available in the UK, albeit in limited numbers. From a total production run of 1,000 examples, just 40 have been allocated to these shores.
The special model will also be sold in France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Greece, Portugal, Morocco and Turkey.
The Buggy name alludes to this Ami’s open-to-the-elements design, as it does not feature any permanent doors. Instead, there are protective metal ‘gates’ that open to allow the driver and passenger to alight. The roof can also be rolled back for further exposure to the elements.
Some weather protection
Thankfully, especially from the perspective of British would-be buyers, there are temporary measures included to enclose the two-seat cabin when required. The zipped roof can quickly cover the occupants’ heads while transparent, flexible plastic panels (also with zips) can be used to seal the door areas.
As with the roof. the door panels can be rolled up and stored out of the way when the sun is shining.
Taking inspiration from the 2021 My Ami Buggy concept car, the new limited edition features a khaki paint colour, gold-painted steel wheels and detailing picked out in bright yellow. The concept’s rugged appearance is alluded to in the new car’s sensible black bumpers, skid plates and wheelarch extensions.
The roof is the same colour, though the prominent rear spoiler is unlikely to be massively functional in a machine that has a maximum speed of 28mph. Mirroring it at the front of the roof is a new integrated sun visor.
Acid yellow interior highlights
Inside, the simple cabin architecture is retained, while scattered use of the vehicle’s signature ‘acid yellow’ hue brightens it up. There has been a small change to the design of the instrument housing and there’s a new Bluetooth speaker option called “Ultimate Ears Boom” that can be slotted into the minimalist dashboard for up to 15 hours of listening. It is removable to use elsewhere.
The same approach is taken for on-board storage. New to the Ami is a removable steering wheel-mounted bag for holding small items (the Ami does not have airbags). It’s held in place by rucksack-style clip-on buckles and is designed to be taken out of the car.
Although the My Ami Buggy II has been influenced by the rugged-looking concept of the same name its powertrain has been unchanged and a single electric motor drives the front wheels.
It is powered by a 6kW electric motor, which sends up to just 8bhp to the front wheels. Energy comes from a small, lightweight lithium-ion battery pack with a 5.5kWh capacity, in theory allowing a range of up to 47 miles at low speeds. It can be charged up in about four hours from a suitable three-pin household plug socket.
In UK legislation the Ami is defined as a “light quadricycle” and to drive it legally a rider needs either an AM moped licence or a full category B licence. That means people as young as 16 could drive the Ami. In France, it’s possible to get behind the wheel of similar cars from as young as 14.
