AFTER A brief spell away, the BMW Z4 will returns to UK showrooms in 2019. Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming roadster.
What is the 2019 BMW Z4?
Plenty of BMW’s cars are available in convertible guises, but the BMW Z4 remains strictly a two-seat roadster.
Though it’s expected to bring back the sporting edge we felt was lacking somewhat in its predecessor, it won’t be a hardcore sports car. Instead it is designed for a mix of driving pleasure and relaxed, wind-in-the-hair everyday motoring.
The 2019 Z4 has been developed alongside the new Toyota Supra, and the cars will share some the same platform and front-engined, two-seat, rear-wheel-drive layout. Despite this, BMW and Toyota claim the cars will be noticeably different to drive.
What engines will the BMW Z4 come with?
From launch, buyers will be able to choose from one of three petrol engines; a 2-litre four-cylinder with 194bhp or 254bhp, or a 3-litre six-cylinder with 335bhp.
The Z4 will be rear-wheel drive irrespective of the engine under the bonnet, and the only transmission option will be an eight-speed automatic.
What tech does the BMW Z4 have?
Plenty of sports tech will be featured on the new Z4, though buyers will need to pay extra for some of the more exciting gear. A head-up display is optional on all models, and only the range-topping 335bhp car gets adaptive suspension and electrically adjustable sports seats as standard.
Safety and convenience tech is decent across the new Z4 range, as all cars come with parking sensors, lane departure warning and an autonomous emergency braking system that’s active at speeds between 6mph and 37mph.
When will the BMW Z4 go on sale?
It’s already on sale in the UK. Deliveries are on track to begin in March 2019 – allowing early adopters to break in their roadster in time for the warmer and sunnier spring and summer seasons.
How much will the BMW Z4 cost?
Prices will begin at £36,990 for the entry-level 194bhp model, and £40,690 for the 254bhp version. The range-topping 335bhp Z4 starts at £49,050.
What are the BMW Z4’s rivals?
More traditional front-engined, rear-wheel drive rivals include the Jaguar F-Type and the Mercedes-Benz SLC (the latter with a folding metal roof, unlike the fabric roofed BMW). The BMW Z4 will also face stiff competition from the likes of the Audi TT Roadster and Porsche 718 Boxster.
