A MACAU businessman has paid a reputed £12m for a fleet of 30 red, long-wheelbase Rolls-Royce Phantoms, but the car maker is remaining tight-lipped about the discount he might have negotiated.

Stephen Hung, the multi-millionaire owner of the Louis XIII hotel in Macau, plans to use the cars to transport guests to and from the venue when it opens in 2016.

It is Rolls-Royce’s biggest single order, while two of the cars will be the most expensive it has ever made. Features exclusive to Hung’s Phantoms include bespoke clocks designed and created by Graff Luxury Watches, black leather with details that echo the lobby floor of the new hotel and what the car maker calls “external and internal gold-plated accents.”

Assuming reports of the £12m sale price are correct, it means each of the cars cost an average of £400,000, including UK taxes, or about £40,000 more than the list price. However, it is not known whether this figure includes shipping and the training, by Rolls-Royce, of the 30 chauffeurs who will drive the cars.

When asked if the hotelier had been given a discount, a spokesman for Rolls-Royce said: “We can’t comment. The deal is about delivering the customer’s requirements; making sure the cars are exactly what Mr Hung needs.”
