Video: Bullitt remake sees action transferred to, er, Northamptonshire

IT’S NOT exactly San Fran, and the smart Nisa Local in sleepy Silverstone village (don’t miss the first appearance of the mysterious green VW Beetle, parked outside it) is no downtown liquor store, but as a tribute to the famous chase sequence in Bullitt, this short film isn’t bad.

Most important, it features the movie’s main stars: Lieutenant Frank Bullitt’s Ford Mustang GT in Highland Green, and the hitmen’s black Dodge Charger R/T. Well, examples of same, at least.

It’s a shame the filmmakers, Silverstone Classic, the motoring show that takes place at Silverstone from July 25-27, couldn’t use the original soundtrack. At least the gentler, sound-alike version allows us to hear the real music: a pair of bellowing V8s and those howling rear tyres.

Top marks for the loving attention to detail: the rear-view mirror sequence when the Dodge’s driver realises Bullitt’s on their tail and buckles up, and of course the appearances of that green Beetle.

And amazing how the makers persuaded its owner to allow them to destroy the Dodge in a fiery explosion. At least, we assume they asked him.
