Police in Florida rescue motorist from violent, fiery car crash
FLORIDA Highway Patrol (FHP) have released footage of a Mazda smashing into the back of a stationary police vehicle and bursting into flames.
The video shows a police officer responding to a separate traffic incident. Shortly after bringing his car to a stop on the hard shoulder, a Mazda 5 travelling at speed is seen to swerve into the emergency lane and plough into the back of the cop car.
Moments after the smash, the damaged Mazda burst into flames. The officer appears shaken but able to rip open the driver’s door and pull them from the vehicle, before another policeman runs up with a fire extinguisher to douse the flames.
The FHP is using the incident to highlight how important it is to make the road as safe as possible for response crews. Floridian laws require motorists to either move over a lane from an emergency vehicle, or to slow to a speed that is 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit.
